FOREIGN OFFICE.
S.W.1.
29th June, 1938.
With reference to your letter No. 53838/10A/38,
of the 8th June, regarding the sinking of Hong Kong fishing
junks by a Japanese war vessel in September of last year, I
am directed by Viscount Halifax to inform you that before
deciding whether it would be possible to take a stronger line
in this case, he would be glad to learn whether the claims for
compensation for losses suffered by British subjects in this
incident are yet ready.
2. It would also be useful if the Secretary of State for
the Colonies could give a more precise indication of what action
he has in mind when he alludes to the possibility of taking a
much stronger line.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
NB. Jud
The Under-Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
